December 14 SIP Due Date – but don’t hold your breath

From Clean Air Fairbanks’ site: “The due date for DEC to file its plan to meet Clean Air Standards with EPA is only two weeks away. Our bold prediction: DEC will not file the plan on time.”

According to Clean Air Fairbanks, “December 14, 2012 is the date the plan is due to EPA. DEC has had 3 years to write the plan…Per DEC’s planning process table, the attainment deadline remains December 14, 2014. Filing late makes meeting the 2014 deadline a near impossibility. There’s no excuse for delay. EPA’s sanctions will increase electric rates and redirect millions in federal road construction dollars. Further, Fairbanks and North Pole are currently enduring 5 straight days of UNHEALTHY and VERY UNHEALTHY air pollution. The need to stop this harm to public health is urgent…DEC should stop dragging its feet and protect public health IMMEDIATELY.”

We agree. The UNHEALTHY and VERY UNHEALTHY air pollution conditions in Fairbanks and North Pole continue, and immediate action needs to be taken to protect human health. The agencies with a public trust responsibility to protect human life and health need to step up and do so. As DEC’s website states, “Clean air is essential to every breathing moment.”
